Na Galloglaigh will play their Group 1 games this Sunday at home to Carndonagh. All support greatly appreciated
Naomh Columba 0-14 CLG BnaG 2-8
A year ago nobody would have expected Na Galloglaigh would be disappointed to come away from Pairc na nGael with only a draw, but the lads will be bitterly disappointed to just come away with a share of the spoils today.
Played in a cold and typically windy Glencolombcille the lads played against the breeze in the first half and struggled.
Naomh Columba seemed to be first to every ball and Na Galloglaigh got themselves very very little breaking ball over the course of the game.
Some good Naomh Columba tackling turned over the lads far too often in the first half, sometimes a bit too softly.
While the breeze was somewhat an excuse, the overall first half performance wasn’t good enough and the boys went in 0-9 to 0-2 at half time.
The boys came out the second half looking much more determined, and after 33 minutes a super pass from Cathal Mc Gettigan found Kane Barrett who rounded the keeper to finish into an empty net, to leave the deficit at 5 points. The lads worked their socks off all over the pitch and began turning over Naomh Columba in possession, but for a lot of the 3rd quarter they were guilty of possibly not chipping away at Naomh Columbas lead as much as they would have liked. The second goal came in the 44th minute when a high ball into the square bobbled about a few times before Joey Cullen fisted into the net to bring the difference to just 3 points. Naomh Columba began to swamp their defence but in effect it only invited our lads on to them and right on the 60 minute mark Luc O Bairead scored a monster of a point from all of 50 yards to tie the game up, before Tj Tj Evesson of all people popped up to put Na Galloglaigh into the lead for the first time in the match, in the 61st minute. The lads defended well and worked incredibly hard again in the bid to be the first away team to win in Glencolombcille this season. However the hearts sank in the 64th minute as Jimmy White gave Naomh Columba an inexplicably soft free in just inside the D, when it looked to most of the good vocal Na Galloglaigh support that it should have been a free out for charging. Not only that, Luke Barrett received a second yellow for telling Jimmy what we all were thinking, and found himself on the sideline. The free was scored and there wasn’t even time for a kick out before the final whistle went. That’s 2 draws from 2 for the boys in Group 1 and play Carn in their final group match at home next week. Having beaten Carn twice in the league the lads would feel optimistic, but reportedly Carn have several key players back from emigration and Na Galloglaigh will need to be on the ball to ensure they advance to the quarter finals. Team: Caolan Mc Gettigan, Gavin Grier, Sean Black, Gary Gary Merritt, TJ Evesson (0-2), Jonny Logue, James James Doyle, Joey Cullen (1-0), Luke Barrett (0-3), Pauric Pauric Curley, Christopher Christopher Barrett (0-1), David David Curley, Kane Barrett (1-0), Cathal McGettigan (0-2), Paddy Paddy Peoples. Subs: Dean Dean Burgess, Manus Manus Boyce, Enda McHugh, Kieran Kieran Sheridan, Cormac Friel, Gearoid Horkan
*Reserve Intermediate Championship – Group 1*
Naomh Columba 1-5 CLG BnaG 0-5
The Reserves were defeated today in a tough and tight encounter in which both teams seemed to have forgotten their shooting boots. Playing with the wind the lads were guilty of too many wides in the first half and should really have built a stronger lead at half time but only went in a point up 0-3 to 0-2. Naomh Columba got themselves in front early on in the second half when they hit the back of the net, but Na Galloglaigh had a golden opportunity to level the match up again ten minutes in the second half when a penalty was awarded after Hugh Mc Menamin was pulled down in the box. Unfortunately Kieran Gorman’s penalty was saved by the keeper. Naomh Columba missed a fortune of chances as the game went on but Na Galloglaigh were always in the game right up to the final whistle, and had a couple of chances to snatch at least a draw themselves. Late on both sides were reduced to 14 men as a Naomh Columba forward kicked out at Paul Grier who retaliated to give the ref no option but to give both players their marching orders. As it stands they have lost both their championship matches but with 8 of 10 teams advancing the lads could still have a chance of progressing depending on the other groups. Team: Barry McNulty, Kieran Sheridan, Gearoid Horkan, Dean Boyce, Cormac Friel, Paul Grier (0-1), Ryan Ferry, Enda McHugh, Kieran Gorman, Jamie Heena (0-1), Adam Serrinha (0-3), Odhrán Coll, Hugh McMenamin, Ciaran McHugh, Mark Farren. Subs: Emmet Conaghan for Boyce (HT)

*Bradley loses out in Australasian Championship Final*
Hard luck to Chris Bradley and his Western Australia comrades who were defeated 1-10 to 0-3 by Victoria in the Final of the Australasian Championship in Melbourne on Saturday. Chris started at centre half forward for WA as they played with a strong breeze in the first half which they failed to take advantage of, while in the second half Victoria used the conditions well to build a solid lead. WA had a great one-on-one chance in the second half to get themselves back into the game but unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Victoria ran out ten points winner in the end. Nevertheless Chris said it was a great experience and all credit to him for being selected for WA and progressing so far in the competition, all at the Club are very proud of his efforts.

*U16s Defeated in Shield Final*
CLG BnaG 1-12 Letterkenny Gaels 3-9
There was heartache for the U16s on Friday as they lost out to Letterkenny Gaels in the Final in a thrilling encounter in Moyle Park. In a slow opening quarter it took ten minutes before a score was registered, but after that Na Galloglaigh ran rampant to lead by 8 points at half time, 1-8 to 0-3, with home advantage starting to show in front of a large attendance. However in the opening 5 minutes of the second half disaster struck, as the BnaG defence, which was so solid in the first half, allowed Gaels players to run from deep to score 2 goals in 4 minutes. This seemed to knock the lads for 6 and before they knew it the lead they worked so hard to build in the first half was gone. However, the boys showed the same spirit that got them to the final, when they battled back from the brink against Burt to come from 2-5 to 0-0 down at half time to emerge victors, and kept putting up a fight against the Gaels. Only for some wayward shooting at times and some last ditch defending from Letterkenny the boys could have snatched back victory once again but in the end it finished in disappointment as Letterkenny Gaels won by 3-9 to 1-12. The Club would like to thank their manager Dean Boyce and all the team for all their efforts this year, there is great potential in this team and if they work hard and stick together for one another there is no reason why they can’t take a Minor title home in the coming years. Dean has also expressed his gratitude to the players for their hard work and we congratulate him on getting his team to the final, even if the result didn’t go his way on the day. Team: Jamie-Lee Blaney, Derek Edwards, Kyle Macaulay, Hayden Curran, Dermot Friel, Ronan Docherty (0-1), Patrick Ferry, Cormac Toland (0-2), Ryan Mcmahon, Conor Mc Hugh (0-2), Connor Gormley (0-5), Martin Doyle, Ryan Toye (0-1), Patrick McCarron, Ryan Spike Flood (1-0). Subs: Niall Ferry, Peter Curran, Luke Serrinha, Conor Coll, Matthew Johnson, Niall Trearty (0-1), Darragh Greene, Adrian Gallagher

*U13s*
Our U13s finished off their league matches with a home game against Urris on Sunday. Unfortunately this proved a step to far as the lads from Clonmany were much too strong. But it did not stop the BnaG lads fighting to the end and indeed Conor Coll and Rory O’Donnell scored some of the scores of the game. It has been a good season for the U13s all the same and congratulations to all the players and their coaches on their hard work and good behaviour at training and during matches.
