Naomh Columba v CLG BnaG
Glemcolmcille, Saturday @ 5.30pm (Reserves 4pm)
Na Galloglaigh will play the second of their Group 1 games next Saturday away to Naomh Columba. The Senior match is at 5.30pm while the Reserves play at 4pm.
CLG BnaG 1-14 Buncrana 2-11
It ended all level on Saturday after a thrilling encounter in Moyle Park. Na Galloglaigh won’t know what way to look at this result as in some ways they threw it away but in others they were lucky to get a point. Buncrana started very sharply and raced into a 0-3 to no score lead after 5 minutes, the home side seemed to take their time getting their bearings. Throughout the game Na Galloglaigh were sloppy in possession and every misplaced handpass and dropped ball was punished clinically by Buncrana. The home side did manage to claw themselves back into the game as it progressed but with 5 minutes of the half remaining a long ball into the full forward line didn’t go dead and Buncrana broke up the pitch and a defensive mixup of 3 men going for one ball meant the ball broke freely to Darrach O’Connor who netted the first of Buncranas two goals. Buncrana looked decent value for their half time lead of 1-7 to 0-6 when referee Kieran McShea blew the whistle. Na Galloglaigh were much improved in the second half but were still prone to the odd error, however defensively they managed to keep Jigger O’Connor and John Campbell relative quiet, Gary Merritt in particular didn’t give Jigger a sniff. But ten minutes into the period Caolan McGonagle evaded Sean Black for once to race down around the end line and found enough space to hit the back of the net from a tight angle. Despite this Na Galloglaigh were clocking up their own scores, and found themselves a point down, 1-10 to 2-8, as the game entered the final quarter. With 8 minutes left John Campbell found himself very fortunate to remain on the pitch as his holding of Jonny Logue to the ground via a knee to the throat was only deemed a yellow card offence by the officials. Just after this the Buncrana keeper attempted a short kick out to a defender who Kane Barrett brilliantly dispossessed to free ChristopherBarrett who passed round the keeper to David Curley who finished into an empty net to leave the sides level. It was very much tit for tat from then on as Buncrana kept inching a point ahead and Na Galloglaigh hitting back with their own. Campbell put Buncrana ahead yet again just before the 63rd minute to what looked to be the winning point but in late late drama, Pauric Curley won a free just inside the Buncrana 21, but out by the sideline. It would have been a very difficult kick for Cathal Mc Gettigan had some indiscipline by the Buncrana defence not forced Kieran McShea to bring the ball in closer, giving McGettigan a kick that he was never going to miss. That score levelled the game up once again and was also the last of the action as the referee blew the final whistle. Buncrana will be the more disappointed of the two, but Na Galloglaigh will also be disappointed with their own performance, and showed they can dig deep and battle through adversity when needed. Next up for Na Galloglaigh is an away match to Naomh Columba, 5.30pm on Saturday. Team: Caolan Mc Gettigan, Gary Merritt, Gavin Grier, Sean Black, Tj Evesson (0-2), Jonny Logue, James Doyle, Joey Cullen, Luc O Bairead (0-5), David Curley (1-1), Christopher Barrett (0-1), Pauric Curley (0-2), Paddy Peoples, Cathal McGettigan (0-3), Kane Barrett. Subs: Cormac Friel, Enda McHugh, Gearoid Horkan, Brandon Toye, Kieran Sheridan, Adam Serrinha, Manus Boyce, Lorcan Friel. Buncrana: Rory Kelly, Bruce Waldron, Jack O’Loughlin, Stephen Doherty, Kevin O’Loughlin, Odhran Doherty (0-4, 1F), Kieran McNicholas, Garbhan Friel, Peter McLaughlin (0-1), Oisin O’Flaherty, Caolan McGonagle (1-0), Joseph McGrory, Darrach O’Connor (1-1), John Campbell (0-5, 2F)
*Reserve Intermediate Championship – Group 1*
CLG BnaG 2-6 Buncrana 1-13
The Reserves lost out to Buncrana on Saturday and will also be disappointed with their performance. They were well on top in the first 20 minutes but struggled to get the scores on the board against a very defensive Buncrana side, often playing 12 to 13 men in their own 45. In the final 10 minutes Buncrana ran rampant, with their full forward in particular very impressive, to leave the half time score 0-3 to 0-8. The second half was a fairly even encounter for the most part, Brandon Toye’s goal brought just a handful of points between the sides just after half time, and the defense tightened up also. With 5 minutes remaining Kyle Black popped up to fist in a goal to bring the game level, and gave the lads renewed hope they could emerge victors. That hope lasted barely a minute fortunately as Buncrana broke up the pitch too get a goal of their own and once again put 3 between the sides. Buncrana popped over one final late score to leave the lads with it all to do in their next Championship match against Naomh Columba. Team: Gavin McFadden, Dean Boyce, Gearoid Horkan, Kieran Sheridan, Cormac Friel, Paul Grier, Brandon Toye (1-0), Paul Sweenery, Anthony Fisher, Jamie Heena, Paul Fisher (0-2), Luke Trearty, Kyle Black (1-1), James Whelan, Enda McHugh (0-1). Subs: Ciaran McHugh for Trearty (HT), Hugh Mc Menamin for Heena (50m), Gary Helferty (0-2) for Whelan (55m), Odhrán Coll, Finian Ferry, Mark Farren, Adam Serrinha
*G4M&O Play at Ladies All Ireland Final*
Well done to our G4M&O team who had the fantastic opportunity to play on the hallowed turf of Croke Park during half time of the All Ireland Ladies Football Final on Sunday. They took on Kilbride G4M&O of Roscommon in front of 27,000 spectators at the interval of the thrilling Senior final between Cork and Dublin. It was a great occasion being paraded out behind the Artane Band in front of such a crowd, unfortunately the girls were defeated in their 10 minute match, 1-5 to 1-3. Nevertheless it was a great day for the Club and especially the players and management and we would like to thank everyone who travelled to Croke park to support the team, as well as the LGFA and Roisin Mc Cormack for organising the bus and tickets. Team: Agnes Ryan, Neasa Mc Bride, Paula Cullen, Megan Hunter, Sharon Graham, Bernie O’Donnell, Aisling Dorrian, Noelle White, Tracy Peoples, Yvonne Mcglynn. Coaches: Marti Barrett, Louis Gallagher
