A very enjoyable game at Swilly Park between two fine footballing sides who entertained the good crowd present. Fanad went ahead on four minutes when Kevin Murray headed home a Eugene Rafferty corner. Swilly were level on ten minutes when Daniel O Donnell went on a run, beat three defenders and the keeper to produce an excellent finish. Oran Blaney in the Fanad goal denied Ryan McDaid on 14 mins when the young keeper did very well to prevent McDaid’s effort. Daniel O Donnell with a glorious 30 yard drive put Swilly back in front on 31 mins. Mark Wilson with a stunning strike levelled matters for Fanad on the stroke of half time. Glen McElhinney went close for Swilly as did Shay Durning for Fanad in the final quarter. The winning goal arrived on 72 mins when Fanads Adam Serrinha curled in a delightful effort from 15 yards to take the points back to the kingdom. A fine advertisement this was for the Ulster Senior League First Division. Best for Swilly John Roulstone, Conor Gormley & Daniel O Donnell. Best for Fanad Utd: Brian Mc Veigh, Keelan McElwaine & Mark Wilson.

Letterkenny Rovers and Fanad Utd played out an enthralling eight goal thriller at a windy Bonagee on Saturday afternoon. Letterkenny entered this game having already secured title victory on Tuesday last in Drumkeen. In truth the first half hour of this game was pretty poor with the only chance of note being a Luke Friel effort well saved by Dominic Hull in the Fanad goal before the game sprung to life with 4 goals in a crazy 9 minute period. Rovers took the lead on 31 minutes. Kevin McGrath played a neat ball through to Friel before he found BJ Banda and he netted perfectly with a shot low to the bottom corner past Hull. Fanad however were back on terms almost immediately. Some good work by the lively Conor Matthewson down the right led to him squaring it to Jordan McBride and he scored with his second attempt firing past Christopher O’Donnell with the aid of the post. Remarkably Fanad took the lead on 36 minutes. A long kick out from Hull was not dealt with by the Letterkenny defence and Keelan McElwaine was the beneficiary running on to it before finishing sublimely from the edge of the box. Rovers though quickly equalised on 39 minutes. Some neat interplay between Delap and Friel set BJ Banda through on goal and just as he was about to pull the trigger his feet were taken from him by the Fanad goalkeeper. Banda slotted the penalty home with ease to ensure the teams were level at the interval.
Letterkenny started the second half livelier and after a Gareth Doherty effort just over took the lead on 52 minutes. Luke Friel and Igor Arriel set Kevin McGrath up and he beat a couple of men before firing a low right footed shot into the bottom corner. Fanad equalised on 60 minutes with referee Con McLaughlin awarding his second penalty of the game. Keelan McElwaine and Conor Matthewson combined with some slick play which led to Matthewson being taken down by Dan O’Donnell Jaydee Aliwaye slotted home the penalty with consummate ease. Igor Arriel had a good chance to put Rovers ahead again on 73 minutes after a teasing pass from McGrath before the goal of the game arrived on 87 minutes. Gareth Doherty won possession midway inside the Fanad half before going on a mazy run going past 3 defenders at ease before firing low to Hulls left hand corner. This goal seemed to win it for Rovers but Fanad had other ideas. Deep in injury time the ball found Keelan McElwaine who went on a menacing run before he was fouled by a Rovers defender. A third penalty of the game was awarded and up stepped Aliwaye to level matters and end a fascinating game with honours even. Letterkenny play Bonagee on Tuesday evening to end their league campaign before facing Bonagee again next Saturday in the reserve league cup final in an attempt to win the double.
