Mrs Brown’s Boys star and adopted Donegal man Danny O’Carroll has taken one for the team and given up playing for his beloved soccer side.
Danny, who is known better as Buster in the hilarious television sitcom, loved lining out for his local side Lagan harps in Manorcunningham.
But the actor son of comic Brendan O’Carroll says he will come out of retirement – if they are really stuck!
Instead of playing at his usual right-back position, the TV and movie star will now be shouting orders from the sideline.
“I’m taking a step back from playing. With all the touring I don’t get a chance to keep fit and there are much better players then me who can play right back.
“I will only play if we’re absolutely stuck and we’d have to be very stuck. I am still training away with the team, but I can’t go back to being a teenager again.
“I wanted to continue to be involved so I’m now joint manager with Barney Kelly and it’s working out really well,” he said.
Danny is heavily involved in pre-season training and put his side through their paces at the Old Foundry in Letterkenny this week.
Danny said he will even fly back for games on Sunday for games adding “I’m free now until March next year except for a couple of weeks in September when we’re filming the Christmas Special for the BBC.”
The Dubliner is heavily involved in the local community where he lives in Manorcunningham having married local woman Amanda Woods who plays Betty Brown in the show.
Danny and Amanda recently donated 15 laptop computers to Lurgybrack National School which their children attend.
He said he loves being part of the local community spirit but admits he would go “off his head” if he wasn’t involved in sport.
“I’ve been getting involved in a lot of fundraising. It’s a brilliant club but we’re small and we need to do a lot with the club in terms of the facilities and the pitch.
“It’s great to be involved with Lagan Harps. It’s great for the community here. It’s good for me too, especially when I’m off work.
“I’d go off my head if I didn’t have the football. The lads have responded well so far and they’re putting a lot into training.”
