THE elderly gentleman who died in a car crash on Barnesmore Gap was George McCallig, a popular member of the community in the village of Dunkineely and around St John’s Point.
Mr McCallig, who was 83, died at the scene of the accident.
A 64-year-old woman was injured in a second car involved in the incident.
The dead man was a popular father of six who had been a fisherman, like many members of his family from St John’s Point.
He returned to the family farm on retirement to take up cattle farming.
He was a keen supporter of gaelic games, the county team and was hugely fond of his local club Naomh Ultan who are going ahead with 40th birthday celebrations on the insistence of the McCallig family.
There was a large crowd at the removal of his remains from Shovlins Funeral Home in Ardara this evening, going to his late residence at Dunkineely via Ardaghey.
Funeral Mass is on Saturday at 11am in the Church of Saint Joseph & Saint Conal, Bruckless. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in lieu if desired to Donegal Hospice care of any family member or John B O’Donnell, Funeral Director.
Gardaí are still appealing for witnesses to the accident to contact them in Donegal Town on 074 9740190.
