Congratulations to Letterkenny Golf Club members Pat Mc Grath, sons Michael and Anthony and son-in-law John Bosco Gallagher who attained runners-up spot in the recent Lough Erne Links Golf Challenge, which included competing at Donegal Golf Club [Murvagh], Narin Portnoo and the prestigious Lough Erne Golf Resort, Enniskillen.
The competition format was teams of four, two scores to count, with daily and overall team prizes, and with teams entered from all over Ireland, North and South, from Portrush to Cork.
Off on Monday 21st July at Murvagh, the Links challenge began on a beautiful day with perfect playing conditions.
Scoring was high with the winning team scoring 96 points while Pat’s team came in with a solid 88 points which left them 8 points behind the leaders going into day two.
On the following day at Narin Portnoo, the scoring increased. Following a terrific start with each member of the team paring the first hole, the consistency continued with a number of pars on the front nine and a fantastic finish of three birdies in a row from 16th to 18th.
This resulted in an overall total of 99 points on the day, five points clear of second place and a one point lead in the overall standings going into the final day, which was to be played at the prestigious Nick Faldo designed Lough Erne Golf Resort.
One of the finest golf courses in Ireland and further afield.
Soaring temperatures of up to 26 degrees made it difficult to play golf on such a demanding course, and while scoring was not up to the high standard of previous days.
The Letterkenny team scored 80 points which left them in the running to finish high up on the overall leader board.
Overall Result:
After three days of golf on three magnificent courses and in glorious sunshine the team from Letterkenny finished second overall in the three day Links Challenge, losing out to a team from Fota Island Golf Resort, Co.Cork.
Participating in the Lough Erne Challenge and finishing second in the team event was a fantastic achievement resulting in each member of the team enjoying a wonderful feast of golf.
