The date is set. The plans are laid. The course has been verified. The entries are stacking up. Training’s almost complete.
But Donegal’s first competitive marathon in over thirty years now needs just one more vital ingredient. So what are we missing to ensure the success of this historic event?… The help and support of the people of Donegal.
The steering committee wish to put a call-out for volunteers to come along on marathon day, Sunday 24th August, 2014.
Stewards will be required all along the route, at the various water stations, and also to help out with the celebrations that will be held in conjunction with the event. A host of ancillary activities are planned which is aimed at creating a day of community celebration.
The Steering Group Chairman, Dessie Larkin, stated “We are calling on members of the community to register with the Volunteer Centre, by clicking on their website at www.volunteerdonegal.ie or www.donegalmarathon.ie to fill out a form, or alternatively by calling the Donegal Volunteer Centre on 074 9126740. An information evening will be arranged when the volunteer team has been established.
“We are delighted to have the support of local companies getting behind the event, such as Pramerica in Letterkenny, who have pledged the support of staff members for the event and we welcome any other companies that may wish to get involved in a similar fashion”.
In addition to volunteers, Myles Sweeney, Donegal Sport Partnership and committee member, said they hope that as many people as possible turn out to line the route to give their vocal support to the competitors.
“We want to see the route turned into a sea of green and yellow flags and banners to inspire our home-grown participants and to give a unique feel to the event for all those who will have travelled from further afield”.
After witnessing the recent first sub four minute mile in the county, the organisers are hoping that we might see some more records broken on the day, so come along a be a part of history in the making.
