The Donegal connection to one of the most important chapters in Irish history is to be recalled at a book launch in Gaoth Dobhair next weekend.
The much awaited and anticipated book launch, commemorating the Howth & Kilcoole Gun-Running episode of July 1914, is to be held in Teach Jack, Glassagh, on Saturday 19th July at 8.00 p.m.
The book recounts the voyage of Erskine Childers’ yacht, Asgard and Conor O’Brien’s, yacht, Kelpie to collect a consignment of arms and ammunition off the Belgian coast for the Irish Volunteers.
The book details the trials and tribulations of the escapade and it includes a detailed biography of those involved. This book contains new and additional information never before published especially eye-witness accounts by those on board the yachts, those who planned the gun-running and members of the Irish Volunteers who were present at Howth & Kilcoole during the landings.
The author, Vincent Breslin, Bunbeg, was primarily motivated to write this book because of the Gola island connection with the gun-running and the fact that the involvement of those brave and intrepid men and women was being overlooked and forgotten. The two Gola islanders were, Pat Mc Ginley and Charles Duggan, and relatives of the two Gola heroes will be present at the launch.
This important book launch of national interest and relevance is not an academic book but one that is aimed for the general readership. The launch is in Teach Jack, Glassagh at 8.00. p.m. and all are welcome to attend. The author, Vincent Breslin will be present to meet and sign copies of his book.
