While it may almost be time to put the schoolbooks away for the long waited summer holidays, schoolboys in Inishowen who play Gaelic Football have one more big date to pencil in before that happens.
A unique challenge game between the schools in Inishowen and their counterparts in the Derry City area has been arranged as part of the 10 years celebration of coaching in the primary schools of Inishowen.
The game which should be a memorable occasion for these young boys has been set for Celtic Park in Derry on Wednesday evening 2nd July with a throw in time of 7.00 pm.
It is also hoped a girl’s game can be arranged at a later date.
As part of the 10 years celebrations, Inishowen Schools Coaches John Gibbons and Leo Gill with the help of a number of club coaches, held blitzes over 3 days for boys and girls attending schools in North and South Inishowen, who were all part of the Schools Coaching Scheme.
The North Inishowen blitzes, held in Carndonagh were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who participated.
It was much the same story in Buncrana, for the schools in the South Inishowen area.
Both areas then selected a panel to take part in a finals blitz day, which was also in held in Foden in Carndonagh.
The coaches then sat down to select a panel of boys and girls who would represent Inishowen team if and when a representative game could be arranged.
Neil Forester, Games Development Officer with the Derry County Board was more than interested in helping to arrange a challenge game, as he and Paul Simpson were bringing to an end for the year, their school programme in the Derry City schools.
They will select a panel from schools in the Derry City Council area and play under the name of City Oaks, which is their equivalent of a GAA Academy before moving on to County Development squads.
A similar game did take place some years ago as between Inishhowen and a Derry Select as a curtain raiser to the U16 Buncrana Cup Final, with Inishowen winning comfortably on that occasion.
The Inishowen panel of thirty players is drawn from a total of nineteen schools and indications are, they should be able to give a good account of themselves, with those leaving primary school this week and going on to secondary school, hoping to make the step up to Colleges football with the Colaisti Inis Eoghain Corn na nOg team in September.
Everyone is encouraged to go along and show your support for the boys, especially parents, family members, schoolteachers and club members.
In order to prepare for the game, John Gibbons and Leo Gill have requested the following panel of players to attend a training session at The Scarvey in Buncrana on Wednesday evening at 5.40 pm to be on the pitch at 6.00 pm sharp, finishing at 7.15 pm.
