Swilly Get Late Winner
Finn Harps Res. 2
Swilly Rovers 3
Harps started this game brightly and created a number of half chances, there best coming from Buchanan whose shot was blocked by Fisher which was well set up by Aaron Scanlon. There efforts paid off as on 14mins they took the lead after great work between Darragh Black, JP Malley played in Aaron Scanlon who finished expertly past Wade. Swilly responded well and created a number of chances, McHugh had a great chance to level as when he was played in by Jordan Toland, he rounded the keeper and Porter somehow got back to clear it off the line. Mark McGinley then made a great double save to deny Michael McHugh twice and from the resulting corner David Fisher headed wide. Conor McGlynn then made a great block to deny the onrushing McGeever at the back post. Harps finished the half brightly and had some neat passages of play in midfield and held out until the break.
The second half didn’t take long to get going and with just 30 seconds gone Swilly equalised as from a Liam O’Donnell flick on, Laurence Toland finished at the back post to put Swilly back on terms. Darren McGeever had a chance shortly after and McGinley made a great reaction to keep the scores level. Harps got back in the game and started to push forward and from a Darragh Black cross JP Malley headed home in the 65th minute to put Harps back in the lead. Dean McConnell had a good chance to extend the lead but he shot over under pressure from McDaid. In the 70th minute, Swilly equalised yet again as McGeever shot home from a Fisher cross. Both sides pushed on for the winner and the away side managed to get the winner in the last minute as from a Toland corner, Marty Boyle connected perfectly and finished high into the roof of the net to give Swilly the victory. A good enjoyable game all round.

League Cup Group B
Big Win for Rovers
Fanad Utd. 1
Letterkenny Rovers 5
Letterkenny Rovers claimed all 3 points in this League cup encounter which puts them joint top of the group with Derry City Res. following an impressive 5-1 victory over Fanad Utd at a warm Leckview on Sunday afternoon. It all means that Rovers need a point at home to Finn Harps Reserves on Wednesday evening to qualify for the semi-finals.
Letterkenny took to the field with a much changed line up with notable regulars Neil Lloyd, Matty Harkin, Owen Morrison, Glenn Gallagher, Stephen O’Donnell, Chris Malseed and Ryan Gildea all absent through a mixture of holidays, suspensions and being cup tied. In what was a cagey start to the game action was limited in the first twenty minutes with Daire McDaid for the visitors and Anthony Gorman for Rovers seeing long range efforts go over the bar. Rovers opening goal arrived on 26 minutes. The industrious Kevin McGrath did well to win a corner which was cleared by the Fanad defence as far as Kieran Doherty. He played the ball through to Anthony Gorman whose wonderful chipped cross to the far post found Darren McElwaine who rose to head powerfully past Joe Coll in the Fanad goal. This goal seemed to galvanise Fanad and they started to gain possession and created a couple of chances through Seimi Nani Friel and Mark Friel but both their shots went wide of the target. Rovers doubled their lead on 40 minutes. After some good work by Steve Okakpo the ball found its way to U16 international Gareth Doherty on the right. His defence splitting pass found McElwaine and he laid it back to Oisin McMenamin whose superb angled shot from 12 yards flew past Coll into the back of the net.
Fanad started the second half the brighter and Seimi Nani Friel and Brian McVeigh had shots which went narrowly wide before Darren McElwaine shot straight at Joe Coll for the Letterkenny men on 56 minutes. Rovers didn’t have long to wait though for their third goal and end any lingering hopes of a Fanad comeback. Fanad lost the ball in midfield and as the ball found its way to Darren McElwaine he unselfishly played the ball through to substitute Kenny Doran, He did well to round the goalkeeper and roll the ball into the empty net.
Rovers dominance was further emphasised on 71 minutes. Again Gareth Doherty – who was excellent throughout – was instrumental in the move with a super teasing cross which was like manna from heaven for McElwaine. His header was blocked by a combination of goalkeeper and defender but the ball fell into Aaron O’Hagan’s path and he made no mistake from 10 yards. Fanad did come into the game more and could have got a goal back after Kevin Murray headed narrowly wide from a corner on 80 minutes while they did pull a goal back on 87 minutes. Seimi Nani Friel with a super cross which reached substitute Declan Sweeney and his header found the target beating keeper Jason Quinn. Rovers weren’t finished though and they got their fifth right on 90 minutes. A Jonathan Minnock free kick came off the angle of crossbar and post and fell to John Doherty whose rasper of a hot flew high into the roof of the net giving Coll no chance.
In the absence of so many of his squad Trevor Scanlon will be delighted at the commitment and tenacity of his team with a super all round team performance with some of his younger players to the fore like Gareth Doherty and substitute Liam Blaney to the fore while Fanad manager Michael Deeney admits it’s a work in progress for his side.
Letterkenny next play Finn Harps on Wednesday while Fanad have a week off before travelling to play Cockhill when the league resumes on 6th July.

Bonagee Hold Holders

The home side went into this game knowing that a defeat would mean that they exit this year’s league cup, but an excellent performance from them ensured that any one of the four teams in this group can still qualify. The reigning League Cup holders started the game very well, controlling the game for the first fifteen minutes with their sharp passing and excellent movement off the ball. Neither goalkeeper was tested in the opening half, with both sides lacking that final touch in front of goal. The introduction of Garbhan Friel to the Cockhill side certainly gave the Bonagee defence problems, and he almost gave them the lead in the 62nd minute. A Brendan McLaughlin corner was met by Friel, and when it seemed destined to hit the net, Roy Duffy pulled of a terrific save to leave the score nil nil. Bonagee had their chance to break the deadlock in the 74th minute when Jamie Lynagh weaved past two Cockhill defenders wide on the left and his ball across the six yard box was missed by the inrushing Aidan McLaughlin. The result sees Cockhill stay top of the group, and with Swilly Rovers and Drumkeen to play this Wednesday, all is still to play for in this group. Ref S Toner.

Big Win for Bonagee
Swilly Rovers Res. 1
Bonagee Utd. Res. 5
Victory for Bonagee in a fairly one-sided affair at Swilly Park. Bonagee went ahead on 3 mins when Chris Moran’s corner was headed home by Paddy O Loan after Kevin Barr’s header had hit the post first. Bonagee went two up on 40 mins when Chris Moran’s low shot crept in at the near post. Ryan Mc Fadden made it three on 44 mins after a Mark Harkin cross.
Kevin Doran with a low drive & Kevin Barr with a thunderbolt effort made it five. David Fisher got a consolation from the penalty spot near the end and Swilly’s Oisin Duffy was very unlucky with a fine 25 yard free kick which came off the bar. Moran & Barr both came close for Bonagee. Swilly lacked their usual flair & sparkle in the game & they will be hoping for a much improved performance next time out.
