Forensic experts helping police in the hunt for Madeleine McCann, have carried out an extensive search of a hidden pit found in a wasteland close to where she was vanished seven years ago.
Madeleine’s grandparents are from West Donegal, and she had visited Dungloe just weeks before her disappearance.
Madeleine was three when she disappeared from Praia da Luz in the Algarve in early May 2007.
The forensic team wore specialist masks and blue overalls during the search and then dramatically decided to seal off the hole that had been discovered by sniffer dogs just 24 hours previous to that.
Scotland Yard who are leading the investigation, refused to reveal whether or not anything had been discovered inside the pit, or if it was significant in the search for missing Madeleine.
It is believed officers are looking for objects that may have been abandoned soon after Madeleine was taken.
Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry are being kept informed and are reportedly bracing themselves for ‘significant news’.
The search site is located 300, from the apartment complex that Madeleine was taken from.
The deserted wasteland is also close to where a tourist reportedly saw a man with a girl in his arms the night she disappeared.
