Pat the Cope Gallagher is in a battle for that final seat in Europe, with Marion Harkin, and party colleague Thomas Byrne.

Independent candidate Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, is expected to be elected after the second count, after he secured 124,063 first preference votes.

Sinn Féin candidate Matt Carthy also looks home and dry after amassing 114,727 first preference votes.

In third place is Fine Gael Mairead McGuinness, she secured 92,080 first preference votes and looks set to return to the European top-table in Brussels.

Sitting MEP Marion Harkin, also an independent, has a fight on her hands if she is to be re-elected.

She’s in direct competition with a sitting MEP in the form of Fianna Fáil candidate Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher.

Party colleague Thomas Byrne is also battling for that final seat.

Marion Harkin admitted that her vote had been ‘hoovered up’ by ”Ming’ Flanagan.

She’ll hope to receive some of the surplus left over by Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan to get her over the line.

While Fianna Fáil might withdraw Thomas Byrne from the race, to ensure Fianna Fáil get a candidate from the Midlands North-West elected to Brussels.

The second count is expected in the next couple of hours, and should give us a better indication, as to who will win that the battle for that coveted fourth place position.
