COUNTING is underway this morning at five centres across County Donegal in the local government election.
Thirty-seven county councillors will be elected over the next 18 hours or so.
County council staff and others are in Letterkenny, Stranorlar, Donegal Town, Glenties and Buncrana sorting through ballot papers from the five electoral areas.
There will be an extra eight councillors this time around, to make up for the sad loss of our local town councils under government reform.
Fianna Fail has done well across the county. Fine Gael has taken a hammering at the polls, whilst Sinn Fein has had mixed results, doing well in the north and east of the county but not as well as expected in the south.
The story of today however is likely to be that of independents with a number of high profile candidates set to be elected to Lifford.
