Voting has been delayed on two of Donegal’s islands after the helicopter carrying the ballot boxes was forced to return to base after a technical difficulty.
It is understood the helicopter, an Augusta Westland 139, from Baldonnell Airport was not far from Falcarragh when a warning light was noticed on the helicopter.
The pilot decided to return to base at Baldonnell and use another helicopter.
Another chopper is now en route to Falcarragh to collect the ballot boxes and some members of the media.
The ballot boxes will be dropped by helicopter at Inishboffin and Tory Islands.
The incident with the helicopter has now delayed voting on the islands.
The voting times was due to be from 11am until 3pm but this will now be from 12.30pm until 4.30pm.
