Fianna Fáil Cllr Ciaran Brogan has said the infrastructure on Donegal’s roads has to be improved as road surfaces continue to deteriorate all across the county.
Brogan has insisted that funding is ‘imperative’ in order to improve the infrastructure of our roads.
Brogan told Donegal Daily, “As a county without a rail service, Donegal depends hugely on its roads.
“A large percentage of our roads have deteriorated significantly due to the cuts of recent years.
Brogan believes the issue surrounding funding for our road infrastructure is being ignored by the Government, an example for Brogan, is that of the ‘Local Improvement Schemes’ which have not received any worthwhile money in the last three years.
Brogan added, “Regional road funding has also been cut – the best example of that is the road from Ramelton to Letterkenny at Woodlands.
“Investment is also needed on the N56 from the Mountain Top in Letterkenny to Termon at Bluebanks which is now at the Compulsory Purchase Order stage.
“I am demanding that the funding be provided to complete what is a very dangerous stretch of roadway.
Brogan feels the Government must also renew its commitment to the A5 from Letterkenny to Lifford and on to Monaghan which has been allowed to sit in limbo.
Brogan concluded, “The stretch from Manorcunningham to Lifford is ready to go and this work can start now if the Government allocates the appropriate funding to it.
“I will continue to press for these improvements to our road networks and links.
“We should not be forced to put up with substandard roads while the rest of the country thrives on good roadways and a rail network.
