The students at St Eunan’s National School in Raphoe made the most of the good weather this morning when they set off on their Rainbow Relay walk around the town.
The students and teachers who were joined by several parents and Relay for Life committee member, Liam Porter, all wore bright colours for the walk – symbolising the many different coloured ribbons associated with various cancers.
“The aim of the rainbow walks is to raise awareness of cancer – schools don’t need to raise any funds to do this, but of course if they choose to do so they can. The main aim though is the awareness and it was great to see the children dressed in their various colours enjoying a walk through the town on a glorious day,” said Liam.
“I am sure some people in the town will have been wondering what the walk was about and as conversations happen about that, it raises awareness of Relay for Life and its aims of helping the Irish Cancer Society continue with its fantastic work in Donegal,” Liam said.
He added: “The pupils from the older classes were all very much aware of the reasons behind the walk and were very keen to take part and it was great to see the effort they made for the day.”
Liam is hoping that other schools across the county will follow the example set by St Eunan’s over the next few weeks.
“I’m hoping other schools will take some time and organise their own walk at a time that suits them over the next few weeks. It doesn’t even have to be outside the school grounds. A walk around the school yard even can help raise awareness and if any school would like to organise a walk or find out more they can call me on 0862657758 or e.mail lporter@eircom.net,” Liam concluded.
