There was shock this week among resident of the Loughside Community with the discovery of two illegal dumping sites.
The sites contained a wide range of waste including domestic household waste, construction rubble, carpets and lino, car parts and a washing machine.
The Loughside Community Alert group was set up towards the end of 2013 in response to concerns in the local community about the rise of crime in the local area.
The group now has almost 400 residents signed up from the townlands located between Letterkenny and Ramelton. A text alert system is in operation and the group recently launched their annual plan for 2014.
Brian Sweeney, PRO with the Loughside Community said “We were extremely surprised at the amount of waste located in both sites.
“We have been in contact with the Waste Department of the Donegal County Council who is working with a number of our Committee members to have both sites cleaned up and put measures in place to prevent this illegal dumping from continuing”.
As part of the Area Clean up, Loughside residents will come out in force to gather rubbish on Saturday 24th May 2014. Residents will come together in groups at a number of meeting places throughout the Loughside area and spend a few hours tiding up and gathering rubbish in their respective townlands.
The initiative will be supported by Donegal County Council who will provide a skip, gloves, bags high viz vests and rubbish pickers. After the cleanup, the Resident will meet in the Silver Tassie for tea and coffee, compliments of Ciaran and Rose Blaney.
