Colaiste Chineál Eoghain’s Formula 1 team Realtra Rasaíochta have taken 2nd place in the prestigious F1 in Schools National Championship Final held in Dublin Castle.
This was a fantastic achievement for the team, who were competing against 25 other teams who had made it through to the National Final.
Cáit Ní Cheallaigh, Team Manager said ‘‘We are delighted with this award, we have worked so hard for this and I’m so glad all the work has payed off.”
Things could have been even better for the team as the winners from Presentation College Carlow, will now go on to represent Ireland in the international final which will be held it the Ferrari centre in Abu Dhabi.
“We were so close to going to Abu Dhabi, but we are thrilled, most teams are leaving here with nothing to show for their work. Most of us are 1st year pupils and we will be back again next year’’ said Orla Mc Cracken, Marketing manager for the team.
Work for the 2014 Finals began last September with schools registering their interest in competing. Intense competition followed with 98 teams representing 66 second-level schools from across the country.
‘Realtra Rasaíochta’ qualified through from the western regional final held in the G.M.I.T Castlebar on the 11th March. This alone was a big achievement as only two junior teams were selected to progress that day. The field had been narrowed to 25 teams for the national finals with Realtra Rasaíochta and Optimal F1 from St. Eunan’s being Donegal’s only representatives at the final.
In addition to racing head-to-head, the competing teams were judged on the quality of engineering, portfolio, resource management, marketing, graphic design, sponsorship activities and on a verbal presentation of their work.
The teams would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors for their support throughout the competition, without their help this wouldn’t have been possible.
