More than 60 new high-end jobs will be created at Letterkenny’s new €4.5M Science Park at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
Details of the investment were announced this morning by Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, Richard Bruton, who is visiting the county.
Minister Bruton is in Letterkenny today to launch the Action Plan for Jobs Business Forum from 8am this morning.
Commenting on today’s job announcement, Deputy Joe McHugh TD, “I am delighted at today’s announcement that there will be 60 new jobs being created at the Science Park building. This Government made a commitment to invest in this North West cross-border project between Letterkenny and Derry and today’s job announcement, along with the original €4.5m commitment is a further demonstration of that commitment.
“I am also very pleased that Minister Bruton can be with us in Letterkenny today for this announcement, and also to promote the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs Business Forum. Since 2011, there have been an additional 600 IDA – supported jobs created in Donegal and it is essential that we keep building on this momentum because unemployment is so prominent in the County.
“I also welcome that site works have commenced on a 2,197 m2 ‘Advanced Office Building’ in Letterkenny Business Technology Park, to meet demands of new and existing FDI developments both in Letterkenny and the North West Region.”
Minister Bruton said a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs is supporting job-creation across all the regions of the country.
“The border region was particularly badly hit by the employment collapse 2008-2010 with over 30,000 jobs lost, and in Donegal particularly more than 10,000 extra people joined the live register. In the past three years we have started to see some progress, with 2,000 people leaving the live register and 500 additional people employed in IDA companies in the county. Across the border region an extra 14,000 jobs have been created in the past year.
“However we must do more, and that is why in the 2014 Action Plan we are putting in place measures like establishing Local Enterprise Offices in every country, advance IDA facilities in places like Letterkenny, and a competition to find the best young entrepreneur in every county.
“Today’s announcement that, with support from my Department and the EU, a state of the art new 20,000 sq ft Science Park will be built at LYIT is a great lift. I am convinced that this will prove a huge boost for research and innovation in the border region and ultimately help turn good ideas into good jobs”.
