A young Letterkenny girl hopes to qualify for the Junior Olympics after just two years at her chosen sport, the Triathlon.

Christine Russell, 15, from Woodlands, is one of only two Irish competitors among 65 participants heading to Holland on May 18th for the qualification race.

Christine, who is a pupil at Raphoe Royal and Prior, will have tot finish in the top 17 if she is to qualify for the Junior Olympics in Beijing.

Christine will have to give it her all in the discipline which involves a 750 metre swim, a 24 km bike race and a 5.6 run.

Her coach Sean McFadden says Christine is a one-off and reminds him very much of a certain Sinead Jennings.

“All I can say about Christine is that young sportspeople like her don’t come along very often.

“She is a natural but on top of that she gives it her all in everything she does.

“She is just so dedicated to her sport. It will be tough in Holland but Christine is improving all the time and I feel that to finish in the top 17 is within her grasp.

“I certainly hope she does it because it will be some reward for all the dedication she has put in,” he said.

Christine, a former Swilly Seal and now a member of the 24/7 Triathlon Club, is a daughter of John and Elaine Russell.
