A DONEGAL county councillor has written to a Government minister warning him of the impact of the closure of Lettermacaward Post Office.
Councillor Terence Slowey says he has written to the Minister for Communication, Energy & Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte demanding that An Post keep the Lettermacaward Post Office open. Councillor Slowey pointed out to the Minister in his letter that Doochary and Fintown Post Offices closed in recent years and that the community of Lettermacaward are not going to sit idly by while An Post tries to close their Post Office.
Councillor Slowey also informed the Minister that a number of local people had shown expressions of interest in providing postal services after the Postmaster retires.
The councillor said that the people of Lettermacaward would have to travel long distances to Dungloe or Glenties, and apart from the cost of this, it would impact greatly on the community, particularly the elderly.
He also said that the opposition are peddling many myths, when it comes to the closure of post offices in recent years. Councillor Slowey said Fianna Fail stood over the closure of 197 Post Offices from 2006 to 2010, but the last three years has only seen 17 closures.
“This Government is in fact working to reinvent post offices. The business being done across post office counters has actually increased in recent years,” he said.
Finally, Councillor Slowey said any closure of the Lettermacaward Post Office would impact greatly on the adjoining local shop and he pledged 100% support to the people of Lettermacaward in demanding that An Post keep their post office open.
