Our Seniors and Reserves were both in action at the weekend with home games hosting Urris.
The reserves were the early starters with their game throwing in at 5.30. The first half was a very close affair with the Red Hugh’s lads playing with a strong breeze were one point up at the break 1-3 to 1-2. It was a very different affair in the second half. Our lads stepped it up a gear and totally dominated the game against the wind. The Clonmany men couldn’t get to grips with the movement of the Reds going forward. The Urris defence was opened time after time and the Red Hugh’s boys took full advantage racing into a nine point lead. A late rally from the Clonmany men reduced the deficit to six points before the boys again took control and ran out easy winners on a score line of 3-9 to 2-3. Star men on the day for us was Noel Ewing, Micheal Devine, Ryan Bradley, Damien Wilson & Corey Gallagher.
The first team lads took the field at 7pm in their second game of their campaign after a first game victory over Milford at home the lads were hoping to keep on track with another home win. The Urris lads were not going to be an easy hurdle after knocking the Cross lads out of the championship last year.
It was a very nervy opening with both sides wasting chances in the early minutes of the game. The Reds got the first score through Gerard Melaugh after five minute. The visitors got an equalizer almost ten minutes later. It was tit for tat there after until the final ten minutes of the half. A long diagonal ball into Calvin Bradley who laid it off to Eugene Brown seen him up ended in the box winning a penalty which Calvin tucked away with ease. The Urris lads kept their cool and went on the attack straight away a long high ball into the box wasn’t dealt with the ball was punched to the net by K Mc Laughlin to cancel out the Reds penalty. The half time score was 1-4 to 1-3
The visitors came out strong in the second half and got an equalizer through Conor Brennan. Urris had a lot of possession early in the second half but failed to capitalize on it. The Red Hughs lads kept probing away and were creeping ahead slowly with points from Damien Brown, Johnny Carlin, Gerry Melaugh & Martin Bonner. The Cross men found themselves three points up with ten minutes to go. The visitors were not going to lay down quietly and closed to gap to two points before disaster stuck again for the home side. Another long hopeful ball into the box from the Urris lads and a mix up in our defence seen the ball ending up in the back of the net.
The Clonmany men were in the driving seat and quickly raced into a four point lead that was a gap that was too much to claw back. A late rally from the home side was too little too late and the visitors ran out winners on the day. The final score was Red Hughs 2-7 Urris 2-10
