He was speaking as the controversy continues over the Commissioner’s use of the word ‘disgusting’ during a Dail hearing.
Deputy MacLochlainn said: “The outrageous comments made by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan when he last appeared before the Oireacthas Public Accounts Committee have fundamentally undermined the stated objective of this government to encourage and support whistleblowers in the public and private sector.
“It is remarkable that weeks after making the comments the Commissioner still refuses to withdraw his remarks and apologise.
“I welcome the fact that a number of government Ministers have called on the Commissioner to withdraw his comments but an apology is also required.
“The people of this state expect that after the Cabinet meeting tomorrow the Taoiseach will demand a withdrawal and an apology from the Garda Commissioner.
“If this is not forthcoming from the Commissioner then his position is untenable and he should resign.”
