Gardai have issued a warning about the possible advertising and sale of spurious copy chainsaws and generators to unsuspecting customers in Donegal.
They say chainsaws may be offered on the market will be copy replicas of established market leaders but only have a operating life of only 40/45 hours.
There is no back up, guarantee, quality and compliance with health and safety standards may also be in doubt.
Local Garda Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Paul Wallace has advised the public not to be duped by advertisements by unscrupulous persons who use authentic sales platforms to advertise these phones.
Commenting Sgt Wallace said “We have certain information about the purchase of a this type of equipment in Europe which originates in the Far East. This again looks like the recent iPhone scam and people may get caught.”
The quality construction and design of equipment such as a chainsaw or an electricity generator is of paramount importance from an health and safety point of view and purchasers or users should not be ‘conned’ into purchase of sub standard equipment that does not reach industry and European norms.
This type of equipment should only be purchased from authentic dealers where the purchaser can be assured of a quality product which reaches all necessary environmental and safety standards and is guaranteed to do the job intended.
“It is important for the public to be aware that ‘ buyer beware’ as if you purchase equipment which is useless there is usually no comeback.
“Remember if it sounds too good to be true it normally is. But by purchasing you are feeding into crime in your county and in your community,” Sgt Wallace concluded.
It is important to report to Gardai if you have become a victim of this type of crime.
