A young Donegal man has revealed how he thought he was in the middle of a terror attack after the huge explosion which rocked Harlem.

Matthew Smith had only been in America a week when he was caught up in the huge explosion.

Matthew, from Burtonport, lives just a couple of blocks from where the explosion went off at 116th and Park Avenue.

Last night the 26 year old revealed how his entire building shook amidst the deafening sound of the explosion.

Matthew told Donegal Daily how he has walked past the building which exploded a number of times since landing to stay with his brother Daniel just a week ago.

“The sound of it was unreal. Even people over in New Jersey could hear it so we are only a couple blocks away so you can imagine how loud it was.

“It just sounded like a bomb has gone off. It was that loud and you could feel the vibrations going through the whole building.

“I thought it could have been our building at first because the explosion felt very close but then we looked out the window and seen it was only a few blocks away.

“It was just mayhem then with fire trucks coming out of everywhere and police sirens going off and you could see people trying to get away from the area.”

US officials are still looking into the explosion which is believed to have been caused by a gasleak.

Newspapers in America are reporting that eight people have now ben confirmed dead in the blast.
