Against a weakened Buncrana team, who decided to rest their county minor players ahead of the MacLarnan Cup final on St. Patricks Day, the Letterkenny lads had to come from behind before putting the opposition to the sword.
The Gaels took the lead through points from Cormac Cannon and Sean McDonagh before a fine point and then a fortuitous ball into the box struck an unfortunate Letterkenny body before hitting the back of the net.
The Inishowen men struck and raised the green flag once again to give them a 5 point lead with 17mins played. Despite the setback the Gaels rallied and responded with a goal from McDonagh and fine points from Cannon and mid fielder Tristan Ferris to leave the Cathedral Town charges with a one point deficit at the interval.
Buncrana took the initiative in the opening exchanges of the second half as they slotted over what was to be their final score of the contest as the Letterkenny Gaels showed a ruthlessness for the remainder of the game. The solid defensive display of the unit and in particular Conal Doherty, Conor Coll and Conor Brown was the foundations on which the second half performance was built upon. Goals from Shaun Haugh and Aidan Hanley alongside Shaun Boyle, Cannon, McDonagh, Paddy Doherty and the hard working Oisin Canning resulted in a final score of Letterkenny Gaels 3.12 Buncrana 2.02.
The Minor league takes a weeks respite for the St. Patricks Day celebrations before the Lifford minors make the journey to the Glebe in a fortnights time.
