BY EAMON HARVEY Karl Griffin wins 800m at Athlone International meet
Earlier tonight, Karl Griffin, UCD A.C. /Tir Chonaill, in a packed Athlone International Stadium, had the narrowest of victory over Irish 800m champion Niall Tuohy, U.L/Ferybank A.C. –Griffin 1min50.47secs;Tuohy 1min 50.48secs.
The Donegal Town man, beaten by Tuohy in recent Irish Universities and Indoor championship finals battled his way from a 3metres deficit with 50m to go to shade the race.
This is Karl’s final indoor race of the season and a second sub 1min 50.5secs qualification time for summers World Juniors.
Earlier today the the Irish team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships to be held in Sopot, Poland from 7-9 March was announced
Mark English, UCD AC/Letterkenny, who recently smashed the 800m Indoor record, gained selection while David McCarthy, West Waterford AC, who has strong Donegal connections, gets the 1,500m berth.
