Hundreds of young car enthusiasts arrived in Letterkenny around 7pm for a “Car Cruise” and have been circling the town and surrounding areas since.
Dozens of the vehicles have come from the North, with car cruise supporters from Tyrone and Armagh in Donegal.
Gardaí have set up a number of checkpoints to check tax, NCT and insurance – with an emphasis on modified vehicles which haven’t been properly covered by insurance.
At least one vehicle has been seized.
The ‘cruise’ began at 7pm at the Retail Park after it was organised on Facebook and advertised as “The First Southern Ireland Cruise”.
There were long tailbacks in the town right through the evening and into the early hours.
