DRINKING water is so bad in Gaoth Dobhair that doctors are recommending that parents no longer give it to young children and infants, local people say.
Dr Tony Delap the GP who practices in Derrybeg will address a public meeting tonight about the issue.
“The chemicals which are at high levels are Manganese, Iron and Aluminium,” said local political activist Aodán ó Gallchóir.
An information night will be held in the Crannóg at 7:30pm to discuss the state and future of the Gaoth Dobhair water system.
“Gaoth Dobhair’s water system is said to be one of the most complex in the country due to the deteriorating pipes and the high levels of manganese, aluminium..etc.. There has been 13 pipe bursts in Gweedore since the beginning of the year.
“Politicians and other public representatives have been informed of the night and are encouraged to participate in the debate. A representative from Donegal County Council has proposed that a delegation should be formed to contact and meet Uisce Éireann to alleviate the ever growing issue.”
Fr. Brian Ó Fearraigh will chair the night and Dr. Tony Delap will speak of the consequences of the chemical levels present in the water.
One of the meeting’s organisers is Hughie Mc Bride – Fianna Fáil’s Glenties Electoral Area convention candidate.
