The media is awash with advertisements for gyms, clubs, bootcamps and fitness classes.
We are bombarded with weight loss products: pills, powders, diets, shakes and drinks… each one telling us why their way is the best way to start the New Year.
With all of these options available to us, why is it that New Year’s resolutions never seem to last.
Why do the majority of people, who start out with the best of intentions and with steely determination never seem to get past the first few weeks?
They seem to have everything that they need on their doorstep, so what’s missing? What is holding them back from success? Anyone? Anyone?
The answer has nothing to do with calories, cardio, weights or diets.
The answer is simple…….. Planning your goal.
How many of you have just rolled your eyes, or laughed, or think that I am talking out of my posterior? Now, how many of you are still 100% committed to your New Year’s resolution?
Goal-setting has been the not-so-secret “secret” that the most successful people in the world have been using for years.
When was the last time you wrote down what you wanted to achieve?
I know that the majority of you are reading this and saying that you know what you want to achieve, but it isn’t as simple as just knowing what you want. If you truly want to achieve your goals, you need to set out a plan.
The plan isn’t just a tool to confirm what you want, it will help reaffirm what you want. Goal setting provides stimulation and motivation.
Once you know what your goal is, write it down and then put it up in places around your house where you will see it; on the fridge, in the bathroom, beside your bed, in your wallet or purse. You are basically programming yourself into doing what you want.
The subconscious mind controls automatic behaviour habits. It does not think or reason. It works like a computer that can be programmed. If it gets bombarded with negative suggestions throughout the day, the outcome of your goals when things get tough will more than likely be failure. When you write down your goals and you are constantly being faced with them, reading them and accepting them as real, your subconscious will programme itself to do the same. When things get tough with training or with your diet, you will come up with a solution without even thinking about it.
This can be the difference between hitting the snooze button or getting up and doing an early morning training session. It can be the difference between making a good breakfast that will set you up mentally and physically for the day, or rushing out the door at the last minute and grabbing whatever you can get your hands on.
If you are truly committed to what you want for the New Year, go and grab a pen and paper and write down the main goal that you want to achieve. Write it in the present tense, as if you already have it. Keep it with you and read it every chance you get.
Do this and your goals will last far beyond January.
