A GAOTH DOBHAIR company has won a major new contract to supply specialist lifejackets to the fishing industry – with more jobs on the way.
Sioen, a specialist uniform manufacturer based at the business park in Derrybeg, has been awarded a €1.5M contract by Bord Iascaigh Mhara to supply the commercial fishing industry with automatic lifejackets over the next five years.
The jackets will make it easier to locate fishermen who get into difficulty. They are fitted with specialist beacons.
John Sheamais ó Fearraigh Sinn Fein told Donegal Daily: “Many Families over the years have lost loved ones in this industry, and with this modern technology many lives will be saved in the future.
“The contract worth over €1.5 million in supplying over 4,000 fishermen over 5 years will secure the current staff in employment and with now an opportunity to employ additional staff in 2014, which is a huge benefit to the local economy.”
He added: “The Gaoth Dobhair area like many other areas in the county has been hit hard with the recession and emigration,of our youth.
“I also hope that this can be opened out not to just the fishing industry but the leisure crafts that take to the seas around Ireland on a daily basis.
“Deputy Pearse Doherty raised this issue in the Dail in June of 2013 to make personal locator beacons mandatory after another tragedy off the east coast of Ireland.”
