A man is to appear in court after thousands of euro of damage was caused to a dole office in Buncrana.
The 40 year old was arrested after a jeep was driven through the front doors of the Department of Social Protection offices at McCarter Road on Friday night.
It followed an earlier incident in which the same 4×4 jeep was also used to cause criminal damage to a pub at Ture, Muff on the Inishowen Peninsula.
That incident occurred at 10.30pm and when Gardai went to investigate the suspect fled.
Gardai pursued the suspect and he eventually mounted steps and crashed into the front doors of the dole office in Buncrana at 11pm.
Nobody was hurt in either incident.
However, it is estimated the damage to the dole office was more than €10,000.
A man was arrested at the scene and questioned at Buncrana Garda station which is right next door to the scene of the crash.
He was charged under the Criminal Justice Act and will appear at Buncrana District Court on January 9th next.
Local Buncrana Town councillor said people in the town were shocked at the chain of events.
“It is the talk of the town but people are just relieved that nobody was hurt,” he said.
