Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has welcomed the EU Parliament’s investigation into the role played by the Troika in Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Cyprus.
As part of this process the EU Committee has sent a questionnaire to the political leaders in these countries asking about the role played by the Troika in their countries.
However Deputy Doherty said the questionnaire should also be sent to Fianna Fáil as the governing party who “surrendered” the state to the bailout.
Deputy Doherty said: “I welcome the EU Parliament’s investigation into the role the Troika has played in Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Cyprus.
“It is clear however that the questions need also to be addressed to Fianna Fail as the government of the time of the important decisions.
“Sinn Fein contributed through our political group to drafting the questionnaire which contains questions to the EU institutions and IMF as well as direct questions to the Member States.
“These include asking the political leaders of each country why they decided to request a financial assistance programme and what role and function they played in the negotiation and set-up of the financial assistance programme for your country.
“Clearly these are important questions that have never been fully answered in an Irish context.
“I look forward to seeing the replies from the Taoiseach and current Minister for Finance but these questions should also be sent to Fianna Fail as the governing party who surrendered the state to the bailout.”
