DONEGAL republican Joe O’Neill has died, aged 76.
The honorary life vice-president of Republican Sinn Féin passed away at Sligo General Hospital last night.
He sided with Ruairi O’Bradaigh in the Sinn Fein split after Gerry Adams lifted a boycott of Dail elections.
O’Neill gave the oration at O’Bradaigh’s funeral in June.
His nephew is the Fine Gael councillor Barry O’Neill.
Chair of County Donegal ETB, Cllr Philip Mc Glynn has expressed his sadness on the passing of Mr O’Neill a former Co Donegal VEC member.
” I wish to convey my sympathy to Mr O’Neill’s brother, sisters, nieces & nephews both on my own behalf & that of County Donegal ETB”, he said.
“Mr O’Neill made a great contribution to education in Donegal & will be sorely missed by all his friends & relatives”
