DD EXCLUSIVE: A Donegal village has mistakenly been officially named as Ireland’s capital of crime.
Kerrykeel came top of the list for a number of serious offences after a computer error by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The figures were released today as part of the crime statistics for the country for the second quarter of this year.
But it was soon discovered that the normally quiet Donegal village, which has a population of around 400, was mixed up with one of Dublin’s busiest areas – Kevin Street.
The computer glitch meant that there was a huge increase in recorded crime in every area from burglary to sex offences to fraud.
A spokesman for the CSO admitted an error was spotted and then rectified.
“The bottom line was that Kerrykeel was mixed up with Kevin Street due to a computer error.
“It meant that all of the crimes recorded in the Kevin Street District were attributed to Kerrykeel in Co Donegal.
“It was brought to our attention and rectified,” he said.
Kerrykeel Garda station is an appointed station with a Sergeant and two Gardai but out-of-hour calls are referred to Milford Garda station.
