EXCLUSIVE: LETTERKENNY General Hospital will be rebuilt with bigger and better facilities, Donegal Daily can reveal.
Plans to restore the hospital will be unveiled at a public meeting at the town’s Mount Errigal Hotel this afternoon.
But we can reveal that the multi-million euro rebuild will also include new recommendations which will see Letterkenny General partner across the border with Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry to see new services for the people of Donegal.
Among the ambitious plans contained in a report to the HSE will be the provision of 24/7 acute cardiology care with shared facilities and staff.
Those shared facilities will include the use of a cardiology laboratory in Derry.
The provision of acute cardiology care in a newly-built Letterkenny General Hospital could see fewer patients no longer having to travel to Sligo Regional Hospital.
It’s a major step forward for the hospital with patients previously having to be transferred to other hospitals.
The West/North West Hospital Group will hold its first public board meeting at the Mount Errigal at 2pm.
The agenda will include an update on the Letterkenny General Hospital recovery plan and details of a major rebuilding programme, presented by Seán Murphy, General Manager of LGH and Bill Maher, Group CEO of the new West/North West Hospital Group respectively.
Mr Murphy will outline a proposed timescale for the replacement of facilities destroyed in July’s flood.
An interim engineer’s report will say how more than 50mm of rain fell in just over an hour in a catastrophic ‘1-in-100’ years downpour.
