THERE is widespread shock in the North West after the sudden death of the poet Seamus Heaney,
A native of south Derry and a regular visitor to Co Donegal, Mr Heaney was 74.
His works have been studied in schools here for a generation and he was acclaimed by critics as Ireland’s great poet since WB Yeats.
The former St Columb’s College student won the Nobel prize for literature in 1995.
Heaney had been awarded numerous prizes and received many honours for his work. He recently suffered from ill health.
