UPDATED: DEFENCE Forces experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a bomb in Co Donegal.
Gardai in Inishowen had earlier cordoned off a house after a suspicious object was found at the rear of the dwelling.
The house in Gleneely was cordoned off after the owner noticed the device earlier today on his doorstep.
Gardai arrived and had placed a white Garda tape across the road outside the house awaiting the arrival of bomb disposal experts from Athlone.
A Defence Forces spokesman said the device was viable and an expert later carried out a controlled explosion.
The house where the find has been made is about a mile outside Gleneely in the townland of Carrowmore.
A farmyard next to the house has also been sealed off.
An eye-witness said there are up to six Gardai at the scene.
“We don’t really know what has happened but one neighbour has said that something has been left at the front door.
“We don’t know what it is but the Gardai have been called and the area is being examined,” he said.
A Defence Forces spokesman said: “An Army Bomb Disposal team rendered safe a viable improvised explosive device in Gleneely County Donegal this afternoon. The Defence Forces deployed a team to the scene by Air Corps AW -139 Helicopter following a request by Gardai, they arrived on scene at 2.30 pm.
“The suspect object was found outside a private residence and a cordon was put in place with some evacuations of nearby houses carried out for public safety. The Team Leader carried out a manual approach to examine the device in situ and the device was then rendered safe by means of a controlled explosion.
“The scene was declared safe at 3.40pm and the team returned to base.
“All items of an evidential nature have now been handed over to the Gardai to assist them in their investigation of the incident.”
A Garda spokesman told Donegal Daily: “Gardaí at Buncrana are investigating the discovery of a suspicious object which was found in a dwelling at Carnmore, Gleneeley Co Donegal. The Defence Forces EOD carried out a controlled explosion at approx 3pm today. No further information is available at this point.”
