History was created at Portsalon golf course on Saturday last when the clubs members contested for Ms Kathleen Mc Cormick’s Presidents prize.
Kathleen holds the honour of being the first lady member to hold the prestigious title of club President.
The golfing fraternity of the north west were peering over the weather forecasts for the region and despite the changing weather conditions there was a large turnout which showed the esteem in which the members held for their President Kathleen Mc Cormick .
The President has served her club well having been a member of Portsalon Golf Club for many years. In this Kathleen’s first year of office as President she has also held the position as club Lady Captain, held various positions on the ladies committee and represented the club on various teams throughout her golfing career.
The President thanked the members of Portsalon golf club who had bestowed the title of club President to her. She said she was indeed delighted and privileged to be the first lady member to hold such a prestigious title She thanked the members and her guests who participated in this her historic first Presidents Day’s at Portsalon Golf Club.
The President thanked John Shields and the greens staff for the excellent condition of greens. She thanked the office staff Karina Mc Ginley, who put in long hours and ensured all ran smoothly throughout the day. She thanked Sean Mc Gettigan and his catering staff for the magnificent food served on the night. Finally she thanked her family for all their support during this her first year as President of Portsalon Golf Club.
The Captain Joe Harkin congratulated the President on this her special day at Portsalon Golf Club. He said that it was indeed his honour to be Captain and work alongside the first lady of Portsalon Golf Club.whom he has known and respected for many years.
After the clear skies the previous day the golfers of Portsalon took to the course with some rain and windy conditions. The tough playing conditions was reflected in the scoring with few birdie puts being recorded. With the weather playing a pivotal roll the conditions were indeed favourable to the long and straight strikers.
The winner of this years Presidents prize was five handicapper Tim Browne who started off with a bogey 5 on the first followed by a double bogey on the second must have thought his chance of victory had gone On completion of the first nine he recorded 17 points.
The homeward nine was indeed more favorable as Tim started a magnificent run with a birdie on the par three 11th hole and and further birdie on the 17th , he completed the back nine two under and record with 22 points and an overall total of 39 points Runner Up: Gary Sheehan (17) 36 points B.O.T Gross: Paschal Cullen (4) 28 pointsThird: John Logue (13) 36 points Fourth: Paul Deeney (25) 35 points B.O.T. Best nines went to MichaelMcFadden and Gareth McLarnon . The Country Member prize went to Jim Toal (22) 35 points
Country Member 2nd: Adrian McGurnanghan (28) 30 points. The council members prize winner was Hugh McGinley (21) 35 points. The winner of the past Presidents prize went to Patrick Shields (18) 35 points.The winner of the ladies section in this year’s Presidents prize was Roseanne Logue and the visitors prize went to Karen McCormick (36) 40 points. The CSS was 35 points.
Results
The winner of the Wednesday open staged on 13th August was Rory McFadden (10) 41 points B.O.T (Belvoir Park) Runner Up: Eamon McConigley (12) 41 points Gross: Martin Sutherland (3) 37 points Third: David Edwards (16) 39 points B.O.T. The CSS was 37 points. On Sunday the winner of the members competition was Kevin McFadden (19) 40 points Runner Up: Diarmuid Logue (4) 38 points B.O.T Gross: Stephen Connolly (6) 32 points Third: Aidan Langan (16) 38 points. The CSS was 35 points.
