The number of college students who have chosen to stay in Donegal to continue their education has increased dramatically.
Offers from CAO 2013 show that more secondary students are choosing Letterkenny Institute of Technology than ever before.
Students opting for courses at the college are up by a significant 11%, with first preferences up by 15% while offers for Level 8 Honours Degrees has increased by a substantial 42%.
The courses which are proving to be the most popular include Animation, Law, Sports, Childcare, Health & Social Studies and Applied Agriculture.
The LYIT completely refreshed its curriculum in the last 18 months and has added a wide range of new programmes. All are in growing industry sectors and many have been developed with industry. In 2013 it has added Law and Destination Tourism with marketing.
LYIT now has 48 CAO listed courses, 21 of which have a work placement element. Students can choose from 21 different add-on Level 8 programmes, 11 Postgrad Diploma and Masters programmes enabling them to take their education as far as they want to go.
According to Billy Bennett Registrar LYIT said the number of students choosing LYIT has been steadily increasing year on year.
“However, this is a substantial rise, which shows that the courses recently added are in areas, which people wish to study. These courses are in expanding sectors with high employment prospects.
“We believe this has encouraged students to look at all courses which are on offer at the college as well. LYIT has a lot to offer – excellent facilities, a reputation for accessible teaching and a strong reputation with industry.
“We’re confident by the end of the CAO offers our first year intake will be well above 1000,” he said.
Letterkenny IT now offers over 100 courses running across its Schools of Science, Business, Tourism and Engineering, many up to Masters level. The college also has a diverse and interesting range of courses as part of its Life Long Learning programme.
