POST-HOLIDAY BOOST FOR SKIN AND HAIR
So your back from holidays and your skin and hair needs some TLC. Here are a few tips and products to watch out for.
Karora Gradual Tan Golden Girl
light/medium
150ml (rpp€14.99) available from pharmacies
The advantage of using a gradual tan moisturiser is the amount of control you have over the depth of colour you want.
I firmly believe in “loving the skin you’re in” but if you’re determined to tan, then this is a safe alternative to traditional baking in the sun.
A gradual tan is a great starting point if you are a self-tan novice.
Irish brand Karora is taking centre stage with its self tan products and its Gradual Tan has proved to be a popular brand with its “subtle sun-kissed colour with intense hydration for face and body.”
Gradual tanning products contain less dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the additive that darkens the skin.
This means that it is less likely to streak.
The first thing noticeable about Karora Gradual Tan is the scent. It has a very strong citrus scent which did linger after application.
It was easy to apply and very hydrating. It was also suitable for the face as well as body.
Thankfully, it had gone by the next day and the colour was a delicate shade and I was very pleased with it.
I felt it did suit a Celtic complexion. It wasn’t orange at all.
As with all gradual tans, if you prefer a deeper tan, then, add another layer and build up to your desired colour.
Would I use it again? Yes, it was one of the few gradual tans that gave a subtle colour without streaking.
Other products for the Karora self-tanning range include:
Karora Tinted Self Tan Mist in either dark or golden glow.
Garnier Ambre Solaire After Sun Hydrating Tan Maintainer 200ml €5.84
This product is very rich and glides easily over the skin making application a doddle.
It does have a lingering fake tan biscuity smell but delivers good coverage with a more obvious colour compared with the Karora product after one application.
The downside for me was the scent was still quite strong the following day. The colour was nice and the product moisturised the skin really well.
Garnier Skin Naturals Summer Body Moisturising Lotion – 250ml €3.49
This is a lovely product and very affordable.
Sometimes there’s no getting away from a fake tan smell and this is just is the same for this one but it did go away eventually and I was pleased with the subtle colour.
FIRST-AID FOR HAIR
It’s not just you that can suffer from holiday blues, your hair can suffer some serious damage as a result of UV rays, salt, humidity and chlorine.
Here are some tips to help restore lifeless, straw-like hair back to healthy, shiny locks
Have your hair cut.
Even it’s just a trim, it will make a huge difference to your hair health. Getting those damaged ends chopped will prevent further damage and encourage healthy re-growth.
An intensive salon rescue treatment to help replace the moisture lost through sun damage is a good idea but that can be done at home if your budget doesn’t stretch that far.
This will help to clear your hair of a build up of chlorine. Follow with a good conditioning treatment or moisturising masque and you will see a noticeable difference. Just try to avoid washing your hair everyday for a while.
AVOID OVER-USE OF HAIR STRAIGHTENERS
Using straighteners too often and incorrectly will cause damage to hair.
Try and have a rest day from use to help your hair recover from its holiday.
