A Donegal woman has conquered the freezing waters of the Bering Strait from Alaska to Siberia.
Well-known swimmer Anne Marie Ward, from Portnablagh, is believed to have completed the daring swim yesterday.
The 43 year old posted a message on her Facebook site saying she was exhausted but elated after completing the challenge.
Among the first to congratulate her was Everest hero Jason Black.
Anne Marie said “Finally made it to dry land… can’t even begin to process or articulate what we have just been through, a tough challenge!
“Just tired and so humbled to have been part of this.. just resting the body to day in Nome and will begin the journey home tomorrow, thank you so much for all the good wishes.”
Anne Marie was part of a team from a dozen countries who took part in the relay event in numbing water temperatures.
It took the group three days to cover the 96 km swim.
Along with Anne Marie was her training partner Nuala Moore, 42, who has many relations in Killybegs.
Both women are to leave for home later today and can expect a ‘very warm’ welcome home after their shivering experience!
