The second annual Naomh Conaill 5k was launched on Friday 19th July by the clubs county stars, Leo McLoone, Anthony Thompson, Marty Boyle and Dermot ‘Brick’ Molloy.
Last year’s inaugural event drew a large crowd and this year an ever bigger entry is expected to run the course, which is regarded as “quite fast” by some experienced runners who ran last year.
Leo Mc loone was delighted to be part of the launch and is looking forward to the run which he is hoping will be competitive but would also include joggers and walkers.
“Its great to see so many people getting out and exercising, let it be running or walking and with the weather we’re hoping it will be so much easier. Last year’s 5k was a huge success and we’re hoping that this year we will have an even bigger crowd” he added.
Dermot ‘Brick’ Molloy added that all runners and walking enthusiasts are welcome. “It doesn’t matter whether you want to better your time or just get out for a stroll, it’s all about participating” he said.
Marty Boyle, himself a keen 5k runner, said he was looking forward to the run. “ 5k’s are so popular now and it’s just great to see people getting out on the roads. The recession seems to have created a 5k buzz in the county and it’s a great way to lift your spirits during these recessionary times” Marty said.
Anthony Thompson was quick to add he was hoping that Donegal football preparation would still be high on the agenda at the time of the run, “I hope that we have the complaint that we’re preparing for a big game but we’ll still be there to support the event” he said.
The 5k takes place on Friday 9th August @ 7pm at the Naomh Conaill GAA clubhouse in Glenties. Registration is from 6pm. There is ample parking and full changing/shower facilities. Tea and refreshments will be served immediately after the run/walk. A bouncy castle will also be on site to keep the children happy. Entry fee is €8 adult and €3 for under 16’s.
