Wednesday 3rd competition was sponsored by Highland Motors, Letterkenny, and with another great entry of over one hundred competitors, it was the “other” Lynch brother, Patrick, who took top honours with a magnificent 47pts off 13 handicap. In showing brother Paul that he can also play, Patrick made back-to-back birdies at 7th & 8th to turn at Barnhill’s Amen Corner in level par and despite a bogey at 13th, answered immediately with another birdie at 14th to finish his round on 74 gross. In runners- up spot by virtue of BOT was the club’s most consistent golfer of the past two seasons Michael Costello [8] on 41pts. Michael’s gross 75 was even more commendable in the fact that there were no birdies recored on his scorecard. In third place was Donal Murphy [16] also on 41pts and fourth place went to Jimmy Bruen team captain John Doran [7] with 40pts. Cat 4. Prize on the day went to Letterkenny Golf Club President Barry Ramsay [20] returning 40pts whilst visitor’s prize, on same score, went to Kevin Rafferty.
Sat.6th the Barnhill club once again played host to the Crumlin Hospital for Sick Children Charity and another massive turnout of 64 teams of 4 entered for this very worthy and much looked forward to charity open.
Sunday 7th Open was sponsored by Signal Signs and taking his place in the winners circle after a “lean” period was Cat. 2 player Nicholas Millier [16], with a three point winning margin of 44pts to belittle his present handicap. With a double and triple bogey on front nine, Nicholas showed his true fighting qualities on the back nine by responding with two birdies and a score of 23pts. In runners-up spot was cat.4 golfer Michael Gibbons [23] with 41pts, having shot his handicap of 23 on front nine. In third place was juvenile golfer Connor Friel [10], who, with the help of thee birdies on back nine but with a disastrous double bogey at 17th, still managed 22pts and an overall 40pts. Relegated to fourth on BOT was no stranger to the rostrum this season George Onofrie [15] also on 40pts. Gross prize went to that master of the course again, Michael Costello [7] with 32 gross points, [39 nett]. Despite a card wrecking double bogey at 13th, with the help of two birdies Michael still managed 76 gross.
Monday 8th was the sixth Junior Monday outing of the season and taking top honours again was Tom Doherty [25] with 43pts. In second place on BOT was Michael Shiel [28] on 40pts and relegated to third was single handicapper Christopher Duffy [9] also on 40pts.
