It has been a hugely successful week for our u14 team, with them crowned Northern Board Division 3 champions on Wednesday after a comprehensive victory over Robert Emmetts, and following this with fantastic performances in Feile Peil na nOg competition. The senior and reserves team however both suffered defeats to Fanad Gaels in the league and championship play-off respectively.
The u14s travelled to O’Donnell park on Wednesday to take on Robert Emmetts in the Northen Board Division 3 final. The boys had built up a sizable lead at half time (2-5 to 0-2), the goals coming from Brendan O’Donnell and Jack Hazlett, Further second half goals from Michael Devine, Keenan Diver and Brendan contributed to a final score of Naomh Colmcille 5-9 0-3 Robert Emmetts. The team await the winners of the Southern Board final to determine their all-county final opponents.
The u14’s first match in Division 3 Section C of the Feile Peil na nOg took place on Friday afternoon at Pairc Colmcille against the club we were hosting, Monaghan Harps. The visitors currently enjoy a 4 point lead at the top of the Monaghan Division 1 table, so it was no great surprise when they built up a lead of 2-6 to 0-0 at half time. However our boys put in a great effort in the second half to leave the full time score Naomh Colmcille 2-1 3-9 Monaghan Harps.
A trip into Celtic park (Derry) followed on Friday evening for the Parade; the occasion was marked with huge crowds throughout the route and a tremendous atmosphere.
Glenswilly hosted the Saturday fixtures for the section. Our first match there was against St. Brigid’s of Roscommon. The game started well for our boys, holding the Roscommon side to 0-2 each midway through the first half. St. Brigids then stepped up a gear to build up a lead of 1-8 to 0-2. Our boys put in a storming second half display to narrow the gap to 2 points, before St. Brigids got a final point to leave the full time score St. Brigids Roscommon 1-9 Naomh Colmcille 2-3. This was an amazing performance by our lads, given we were again up against a Division 1 county side. This was also the closest any of the teams in the section got to St. Brigids, who were the eventual section winners.
Jack Hazlett represented the club at the skills test and put in a great effort, narrowly failing to progress.
Our last game saw us take on the Saturday hosts, Glenswilly. Despite falling behind to 3 Glenswilly points, Naomh Colmcille quickly took command of the match and lead by 2-0 to 0-3 at half time. Another fantastic second half display saw the lads victorious on a scoreline of Glenswilly 0-4 Naomh Colmcille 6-03, rounding off a hugely successful Feile for the club.
Congratulations and well done to the team mentors Joe Donaghy and Michael Friel, and all the players (Jamie Rodgers, James Duffy, Jason Fitzpatrick, Oran Downey, Mark Friel, Kevin Gallagher, Conor Doherty, Michael Devine, Brendan O’Donnell, Mark McDaid, Keenan Diver, P.J. McBrearty, Jack Hazlett, Caoimhín Marsh, Daniel Mugan, Jordan Gallagher, Oran Devine, Hugh O’Donnell, David Quigley).
The club hosted Monaghan Harps at the clubhouse on Saturday evening, showing the Monaghan v Cavan match for our visitors, and then both teams were brought onto the pitch at half time in the seniors match against Fanad Gaels, where a presentation took place. One of the visiting players was also celebrating his birthday, so birthday cakes were on offer!
The club would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped out in any way for the Feile. Special mention must go to the seven host families who hosted the Monaghan Harps players, and Trinity Court for offering accommodation to their mentors. Thanks also to Deerpark Haulage for contributing towards the gear for the team, Newtown Community Playgroup for their contribution towards the running cost, and to Kernans Diner and Ocras for helping with the food. Finally we would like to acknowledge our visitors for their unique presentation gift. It was very enjoyable for everyone at the club to meet up with such a great bunch of people from Monaghan Harps (players, mentors, parents) – we look forward to taking you on again in the near future!
The seniors lost out to Fanad Gaels on Saturday evening. Despite the home team, taking an early 1-1 to 0-0 lead, the visitors responded quickly to take control of the match. The final score was Naomh Colmcille 1-7 2-17 Fanad Gaels.
The reserves took on Fanad Gaels in the Intermediate reserves championship preliminary round play-off match at O’Donnell Park on Sunday afternoon. Fanad had the wind at their backs in the first half and built up a 0-6 to 0-2 lead at half time. They extended the lead in the second half to run out winners on a scoreline of Fanad Gaels 2-8 0-5 Naomh Colmcille.
The u12s hosted Buncrana on Monday. A number of players were unavailable so both teams suffered defeats on the night. The next fixture for both teams is at home to Glenfin on Monday (1st) at 7:00 pm.
The Naomh Colmcille Cul Camp is due to take place on 8-12 July.
