FOUR Masters out of Championship despite win – Report by Jim McLaughlin (Four Masters)
Four Masters 1-13 Glenfin 1-12
The Donegal Town team’s narrow win on Saturday evening was their second in the competition but it wasn’t to be enough.
When the full-time score was read that Sean MacCumhaill’s had pipped their hosts 0-13 to 1-8, it meant the Donegal Town lads were out of the Championship. It came down to scoring average and despite the great win by Four Masters who had come back from being five points down, it sadly was not enough.
Donegal Town’s four-time All-Star, Karl Lacey, introduction late in the game was pivotal to the Masters winning. Lacey was brought out five minutes into the second half at a stage in the match when things weren’t looking too good for Four Masters, with Glenfin 1-8 to 0-6 in front. However, Four Masters soon fought their way back into the match with the impressive Dylan Ward proving to be an able replacement for the sidelined Michael Doherty from placed balls. Ward scored three successive second-half frees, adding to his three he had registered in the first half.
Twelve minutes into the second half , Four Masters managed to take the lead with a well placed shot from Luke Keaney. Eventually the ball fell to Barry Dunnion who shot it past Andrew Walsh.
With a Glenfin come back and with only 10 minutes left Lacey then got his team back in front with a well-taken score only for Ward (Glenfin) to level the match up at 1-10
Barry Monaghan then put the Masters a point in front once more, followed by another point from Conor McMonagle. Glenfin came back with another two points – one each from Moy and Gerard Ward. Now in injury time, Stephen Keeney stepped up and clenched victory for the Masters with another point.
Unfortunately, the late victory was insufficient for the Masters to stay in the Championship due to Ardara’s defeat by Sean Mac Cumhaill’s. Glenfin, however, now face a battle to retain their Senior status for next season.
