It is now believed the creature found in the hills around Burtonport was an unusual species of dolphin.
Many locals identified the find as that of a young killer whale because of its distinctive black and white markings.
However an expert now believes the creature found at Meenaband approximately 3kms from the nearest stretch of coastline is a species of dolphin.
Padraig Whooley of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group thinks it is part of a group of Atlantic white-sided dolphins which beached at nearby Traigheanna Bay in Dungloe on June 21st.
Mr Whooley says sightings of such dolphins are fairly uncommon as they tend to stay much further out to sea.
He says he does not know how the dolphin ended up so far inland but suggests it could have been taken there.
“The only thing I can think of is that it was taken there to decay naturally by someone.
“It could have ben taken to this remote area so it could decompose naturally leaving a skeleton which could have been put on show,” he said.
But as of last night mystery still surrounded how this unusual creature ended up dead in the rural hills of Donegal.
