INDEPENDENT councillor Ian McGarvey will become Mayor of Donegal this evening, taking over the chain of office from Frank McBrearty – as we reported last month.
Independent Michael McBride will become the Deputy Mayor.
Fianna Fail will nominate Sean McEniff for the top job, but independents, Fine Gael, Labour and Sinn Fein are expected to out-vote them.
Cllr McGarvey is 82 and has been a councillor for nine years.
He is respected by all sides in the chamber – and will become the country’s oldest First Citizen….and one of the most spritely.
Councillors meet at 5pm on Monday in Lifford.
