Donegal captain Michael Murphy has revealed how the GAA almost lost him to his other favourite sport rugby – but for his father!
On the eve of the Ulster semi-final, the likeable Glenswilly man has told how he loves the oval ball sport and almost took it up.
“Rugby was becoming very popular in Donegal around the time I was leaving school (St Eunans) and starting with the county team.
“A couple of the lads in the class were involved and they were going well at the time.
“They asked me to come out….but the father (Michael Snr) intervened –‘Get out to Glenswilly and never mind the rugby!’ – so that put an end to that,” revealed Michael.
Murphy, who admits his sporting hero is Ronan O’Gara, has completed his BSc in Physical Education with Biology studies at DCU.
He plans to concentrate on his football over the next couple of months and hopefully a long championship campaign as well as a couple of Cul Camps with the kids.
Although Donegal may be 1/6 favourites to beat Down in tomorrow’s game at Breffni Park in Cavan, big Michael is taking nothing for granted.
And there is certainly no time to bask in the glory of being All-Ireland champions.
“All we do concerning last year is acknowledge that we won the All-Ireland and move on and go on and try to improve again,” he said.
