Campaigners from groups opposed to the government’s austerity measures are to field candidates in each of Donegal’s five electoral areas in next year’s local election, the Tirconaill Tribune newspaper reports today.
Journalist John McAteer says that at least four names in Donegal have already been identified as possible runners. The decision was made during meetings of the umbrella groups in Ramelton last weekend where fifty representatives from the groups came together to decide on strategy, policy and possible candidates.
Mick Murphy from the campaign against household, water and property charges was in attendance and he was joined by economist Eamon O’Boyle from Sligo during the weekend meetings which began on Friday night in Ramelton’s Town Hall, McAteer says.
Mr Murphy told the Tribune that he believed their candidates stood a great chance of taking seats in Donegal, particularly in those wards with the largest number of seats.
“What this means is that new tactics will be adopted but the objective still remains the defeat of the property tax, which is a key plank in the government’s austerity agenda,” says Murphy in today’s Tribune.
Speakers at the weekend sessions represented a varied number of groups including Cant Pay Wont Pay: Donegal for Action Against Austerity and People Before Profit and C.A.W.H.T.
Further details are in today’s Tirconaill Tribune.
